Are Sugar-Free Sodas with Artificial Sweeteners Harmful to Health?

Details

Sugar-free sodas are safe when consumed in moderation.

One goal of the Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS) Programme is to make healthier options more available in stores.

If you're used to enjoy sweet drinks and find it hard to cut them out completely overnight, there are HCS-approved drinks that use permitted intense sweeteners instead of sugar.

These sweeteners:

  • Are approved by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).
  • Add sweetness without adding many calories.
  • Are safe to take in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

These sweeteners are safe because they either:

  • Have a long history of use and are considered generally regarded as safe (GRAS).
  • Have been thoroughly tested with strict limits on how they can be used.
