Why Were Chocolates and Sweets Added to HCS?

Details

There has been a change in how Singaporeans eat sugar. While people are drinking fewer sugary drinks, they're eating more sugar from chocolates, sweets and desserts:

  • The National Nutrition Survey 2018 found that people in Singapore are now getting more sugar from foods like desserts and sweets, not just from drinks.

  • Market data also shows that more people are buying sweet snacks.

By including sugary foods in the HCS programme, HPB hopes to:

  • Encourage food companies to reduce sugar in their products
  • Offer more healthier options in these categories
