Schools use the Snellen test to check a child’s distance vision. The test checks how well they see from a distance using a chart with letters that get smaller in each row.
Understanding Eye Test Readings
In the Snellen test, a reading of 6/9p means:
- 6 – Your child was tested from 6 metres away.
- 9 – The smallest row of letters they could read.
- p – “Partial,” meaning they could only read some letters in that row.
This result is acceptable, and your child may not need glasses.
If Your Child’s Vision is Below 6/12
Your child may need to be referred for further checks at either:
- Health Promotion Board (HPB) for Kindergarten 1 to Primary 1 students.
- An optician for Primary 2 and above if screened in school.
